The Department of History at St. Michael’s College functions as an interdisciplinary academic department committed to promoting historical understanding, social awareness, and critical inquiry among students. The Department has traditionally served as an associate department of Economics by offering Complementary Courses (formerly known as Subsidiary Courses up to 2010). With the introduction of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in 2024, the Department has been restructured as a Minor Department offering Minor, Multi-Disciplinary, Skill Enhancement, and Value-Added Courses in History for students from all major discipline streams.
The Department follows an inclusive and interdisciplinary approach to historical studies by integrating perspectives from sociology, political science, philosophy, culture, technology, and contemporary social issues. It aims to develop analytical thinking, constitutional values, research aptitude, and social responsibility among learners. The Department presently functions as a single faculty department under the leadership of Dr. Pratheesh P.

The Department of Statistics is committed to fostering statistical education, research, and interdisciplinary learning within the institution. With the increasing importance of Statistics in disciplines such as Economics, Commerce, Management, Science, and Psychology, the department emphasizes the practical application of statistical methods to real-life situations and decision-making processes. The department strives to simplify complex statistical concepts and nurture statistical thinking among students through practical exposure, software training, workshops, statistical hackathons, add-on programmes, and invited lectures by eminent academicians and statisticians. It also promotes interdisciplinary studies and social research by encouraging the use of statistical techniques to address contemporary social and developmental issues.
As part of the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), the department offers Statistics Minor Courses(DSC), Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC), and Value Added Courses (VAC), along with Statistics papers for B.A. Economics students. The department adopts a learner-centred and application-oriented approach to develop analytical thinking, quantitative reasoning, computational skills, and problem-solving abilities among students.
The Department of Botany was established in the year 1967, the same year in which the college came into being. Initially, the department was intended to teach Botany for pre-degree students and the status of the department was upgraded in 1976, with the initiation of the B. Sc. Zoology course. Eventually it transformed to a subsidiary department offering complementary Botany course for B.Sc. Zoology and functioned as an allied department to the Department of Zoology with the delinking of the pre-degree courses in 2000. Prof. Paul C.J and Prof. Thresiamma Eapen were the pioneer faculty members of the department followed by Prof. Anna Jose and Prof. Sophia George. With the introduction of the new Four Year Undergraduate Degree Programme(FYUGP) in 2024, the department is transformed to a minor department. At present the department functions as a single faculty department offering DSC minor, MDC, VAC and SEC courses. In spite of its limitations, the department extends its services to other departments, clubs and organization for conducting various environmental and academic activities. The department provides its expertise to different schools, colleges and other agencies for projects and seminars. The department also carries the sole responsibility of leading the conservation activities of the college.
