ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Ever since the inception of the college in 1967, the Department of English has left no stone unturned to bring home the lingua Franca to the students of various disciplines. Dedicated service and dynamic growth have always remained the watchwords of the department as it took upon itself the onerous task of unlocking the immense potential of English language to a group of youngsters, by and large, averse to it on account of their prejudiced perception and lack of exposure. In the initial stages, the faculty of the department taught the Pre-degree students who had to learn English as the first language. From these humble beginnings, the department graduated to higher levels by imparting training to the students of various degree courses in the Science, Arts and Commerce streams.
With the commencement of BA English Language and Literature Degree Programme in 2014, the department transitioned into the status of a core department. With a track record of decades of unblemished service under the efficient leadership of veteran English teachers, the department has established itself as one of the most important houses of learning in the college. Notable teaching faculty who contributed significantly to the department include Professor Sen Kalathil, renowned for his remarkable ability to recite Shakespearean plays verbatim and captivate students with his portrayal of characters like Othello and Hamlet. Professor Kalathil, a distinguished writer, also translated Malayalam Mahakavi Kumaranasan’s 'Nalini' into English, earning widespread acclaim. Dr. Mathew V., a prominent Lexicographer, achieved great success with his English-Malayalam Dictionary, selling over 1 lakh copies across South India and beyond. Dr. Mathew V., who later served as the Head of Department and retired as the College Principal in 2022, holds a doctorate focused on Angela Carter, the British Feminist writer.

Besides improving the communicative skills of the students, the department has been playing a constructive role in character-formation, development of personality and professional competence. Notable achievements include students winning accolades at University youth festivals and sports, such as Miss Gauri Manoj Chandran winning Best Actress twice at the University level and the team from the department becoming the champions in University Youth festival competition in 2016. Rony Roy earned recognition in the Asia Book of Records as a Grandmaster for his unique collections. Mr. Nithin Thomas and Mr. Arjun A. participated in the Republic Day Parade, with Mr. Nithin Thomas also representing India at the World Youth Day festival in Russia. Mr. Mohammad Bilal remains a State Champion in Junior Powerlifting. Mr. Akshay Chandrashobha Asok is a renowned film maker whose films have been internationally recognized and awarded for their visual brilliance. Now with the introduction of FYUG programmes in the college, the department has also added BA English Honours programme to the courses offered list.
